A female staff member at a school in country NSW has been stood down after allegations against her were referred to police.

The private Armidale School wrote to parents at the beginning of term four to notify them of allegations against a non-teaching staff member, a month after becoming aware of claims.

Details of the allegations have not been released by the school since it became aware on September 4.

"We immediately informed the relevant authorities, and suspended the staff member concerned while the matter can be fully investigated," a statement from the school said.

"All parties with a direct interest in the allegations have been notified."

Police have confirmed allegations against a staff member are being investigated, but would not reveal the nature of the claims or say whether students were involved.

Inquiries by detectives from the New England Local Command are ongoing.

The Armidale School is an Anglican day and boarding school, and is part of the Great Public Schools association.

Formerly an all-boys school, it start accepting enrolments for female students in term four and hopes to be fully co-educational next year.
