NSW prison teachers are holding a 24-hour strike over the state government's plan to outsource prison education.

The NSW Teacher Federation says the Baird government is planning to sack more than 130 of 150 teachers in the state's prison system.

A group of teachers will protest at NSW parliament on Wednesday at 11.30am over plans to cut more than 85 per cent of the existing prison teacher workforce which they say will leave prisoners unable to access quality language, literacy and numeracy courses.
