NSW Premier Chris Minns' dad dies in hospital days after heart attack

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has shared that his father has died this afternoon, days after he suffered a heart attack.

John Minns was hospitalised after the "massive" attack on Sunday.

He remained in an induced coma at St George Hospital, where he today passed away with his family by his side.

"To the end, he was surrounded by love and family, with his wife and children by his side," Minns said in a statement.

"We thank the NSW paramedics and all the nurses and doctors at St George Hospital, who gave our dad great care this week.

"We have also been very moved by all the messages of support over the last few days."

His brother, Jim, shared a short statement on social media: "The best dad."

Minns has mentioned his dad many times in speeches since he was elected as premier last year.

Addressing issues like education, Minns used his dad, who was a decades-long teacher, as an example.

"For people like my dad, teaching was more than just a job, it was a vocation," he said last year.
