NSW police vow to crack down on violence

NSW police will bolster efforts to crack down on alcohol-fuelled violence following a series of bashings and brawls on Sydney's streets over the weekend.

Police were called to dozens of alcohol-fuelled incidents, including an attack on a group of women celebrating a hen's night and a succession of fights involving as many as 30 people.

Assistant Commissioner Mick Fuller said additional officers would be joined by specialist police from other units, including the riot and dog squads, as part of a bolstered police response to anti-social behaviour.

Assistant Commissioner Fuller said the weekend's events demonstrated there are still people who can't exercise restraint when drinking.

"We want to see people out having fun, but we are extremely concerned by the level of intoxication we are seeing in some people every night," he said in a statement on Sunday.

Police had to call in reinforcements after a series of related melees involving 30 people broke out on Pitt Street, George Street and Central Street in the Sydney CBD around 3am on Sunday.

Two men, aged 24 and 18, were given notices to face the Downing Centre Local Court on April 5 charged with assaulting and resisting police.

A further two were issued with infringement notices.

Meanwhile, a 51-year-old man was found inside a Glebe unit block with severe face and head injuries in the early hours of Sunday.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

And a woman was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collar bone after her group of six was attacked outside a George St fast food outlet while celebrating a hen's night.

Three others in the group suffered bruises and cuts.

A 69-year-old man who tried to help was attacked and left with facial swelling.

Two men, aged 44 and 43, are due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on April 6 to face assault charges.
