A Sydney man who allegedly tried to convince a "father" to sexually abuse his young children has been arrested following a covert police investigation.

Police say officers from the Child Exploitation Internet Unit began speaking with the 48-year-old online last month under the alias of a man who had an eight-year-old son and six-year-old daughter.

It's alleged the offender made several sexually explicit comments about the children, sent the father child abuse material and tried to meet him.

The man was arrested at a home in Seven Hills on Thursday and charged with three child sex-related offences including inciting a person to commit sexual intercourse.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Blacktown Local Court.
