An urgent police investigation is under way after an elderly dementia patient was allegedly brutally attacked by another resident at an aged care facility in Sydney’s south-west.

Emergency crews say they arrived at HammondCare facility in Hammondville at about 9pm yesterday, before finding 87-year-old John bloodied and bruised after he was allegedly attacked by another resident with high care needs.

John’s daughter, Margaret, told 2GB that she had “never seen anybody this beat-up”.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” she said.

Confronting images sent to 2GB, which nine.com.au has decided to blur, show the dementia patient with a heavily swollen, bruised and beaten face, lying in a hospital bed following the alleged assault.

It is alleged a resident attacked John in the courtyard of Linden Cottage, which specialises in caring for those with the most severe cases of cognitive decline.

Executive general manager Jenny Summerton said the company is “extremely sorry and deeply saddened that this has occurred”.

He was rushed to Liverpool Hospital emergency room, where he remains.

Margaret said that the family is “still trying to get to the bottom” of what happened to her 87-year-old father.

She said that her mum received a call from night staff saying that John had been injured last night.

“They wanted to send him to hospital and told mum ‘no need to come, we’re just going to put him in an ambulance’.”

She said that her mum insisted that they wait until she arrived so she could ride in the ambulance with John, and when she arrived, she was “shocked” to see the state that John was in.

Margaret called the night nurse shortly after and was told John “was found on the verandah outside the cottage, bloodied up”.

“This was an assault,” she said.

“The night nurse told me that another resident had an altercation with my father,” she claimed.

HammondCare has since announced a full investigation is under way.
