NSW govt backflip on mergers: report

The NSW government is reportedly poised to scrap some of its proposed council mergers.

Premier Mike Baird is expected to announce on Thursday that mergers between the Hills Shire and Hawkesbury City Council, Shoalhaven Council and Kiama Council, and Walcha Council and Tamworth Regional Council won't go ahead, the Nine Network reported.

Citing leaked information, Nine said Mr Baird was expected to only give the go-ahead to about 20 of the 35 proposed amalgamations following a party room meeting.

Nine proposed mergers are on hold due to ongoing legal action.

Among the mergers expected to be confirmed are Hurstville and Kogarah councils, and Wollongong and Shellharbour.
