NSW drivers told to be safe on drive home

NSW drivers are being urged to slow down on the trip home from the long holiday weekend.

By around midday on Monday, police had issued 1225 speeding tickets and 1657 notices for other traffic infringements, and charged more than 30 people with drink-driving offences.

"It will be a busy day on our roads, with many people due to return to work and school tomorrow," Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said in a statement.

"We appreciate and thank drivers who do the right thing, and we need this to continue in order for everyone to arrive home safely."

Police issued a total of 9142 traffic infringement notices over the long weekend and attended more than 230 major crashes, including the death of a 50-year-old motorcyclist near Goulburn on Sunday.

Double demerits remain in place until midnight on Monday.
