Prominent Sydney Indigenous elder Mick Mundine has been charged over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl more than 40 years ago.

The 79-year-old, who is the brother of late legendary boxer Tony Mundine and uncle of former NRL player and boxer Anthony Mundine, was arrested at about 7am on Thursday in Redfern following investigations into the alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in the suburb in June 1986.

"Sex Crimes Squad detectives have arrested a man following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault of a child more than 40 years ago in Sydney’s south," NSW Police said in a statement on Thursday.

"Strike Force Millersburg was established in December 2025 to investigate alleged historical sexual assaults on a then 15-year-old girl in Redfern in June 1986.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station, and has since been charged with sexual assault – assault and commit indecent act, and sexual assault of a person under 16 years of age.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court next Wednesday.

Mundine, who has been the chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company for most of its 53-year history, has worked in the Redfern community for decades.

Despite decades of opposition, the organisation completed the $70 million Pemulwuy Project in 2023 at The Block, a significant Aboriginal-managed precinct in Redfern.
