A man has had part of his ear bitten off and wallet stolen during an attack at a Sydney CBD bus stop by someone he allegedly knew.

The 25-year-old was waiting on Clarence Street late on Wednesday night when he was allegedly assaulted from behind and bitten.

"A significant portion of the man's ear became detached," NSW Police said in a statement on Thursday.

After a brief scuffle, the attacker stole the man's wallet and ran away.

He was arrested a few hours later and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and larceny. The victim was taken to St Vincent's Hospital.

The 24-year-old alleged offender was refused bail to appear at Manly Local Court.
