Man charged after alleged road rage attack on Sydney bus driver

A man has been charged with smashing a Sydney bus with a shovel in an alleged road rage attack filmed by witnesses.

The bus was travelling on Marrickville Road in Marrickville about 9.40am when it was allegedly approached by the driver of a Subaru station wagon.

Footage obtained by 9NEWS shows the Subaru driver yelling abuse before allegedly taking a shovel from the back of his car and hitting the front window of the bus, shattering the glass.

The driver then fled the scene in his car.

Although the bus driver was uninjured, witnesses told 9NEWS they feared for their life.

"I thought he was trying to kill the bus driver because he was just that angry and aggressive," Theo Tsambas said.

Mr Tsambas, who filmed the incident, said he also feared for his own life.

"The poor bus driver was really shaken and scared. Thank god he didn't come out, I thought the guy was going to come out, saw that I was filming from across the road and come and kill me as well."

Police said a 44-year-old man was arrested after attending Marrickville Police Station last night.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with destroy or damage property and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The man was given conditional bail and is set to appear in Newtown Local Court on March 3.
