Man charged over Sydney carjacking attempt

A driver has been threatened by a man wielding a hammer in a failed carjacking in Sydney's east.

Police say a 28-year-old man was driving out of a carpark in Randwick on Tuesday when another man approached him, opened the door and threatened him with the hammer.

As the driver got out of his car it rolled forward, hitting another vehicle and causing the would-be carjacker to flee.

Police say they later found a 31-year-old man with a hammer, running out of a nearby University of NSW campus.

He was charged with several offences including possessing prohibited drugs and aggravated take and drive motor vehicle whilst armed.

He is due to appear in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday.
