Man charged after NSW letterbox explosion

A man has been charged after a letterbox in suburban Newcastle NSW was destroyed with explosives.

Just before 5am on Tuesday October 15 police visited Hamilton North after reports of an explosion heard in the area.

A damaged letterbox was found. No other property was damaged and no one was injured, police say.

Police executed a number of search warrants and say they seized a number of firearms, prohibited weapons and items used to make and use explosive devices.

A 35-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were arrested in Belmont about 10am on Friday.

The man was charged with possessing multiple firearms, a replica firearm and prohibited weapons, and malicious damage by explosion.

He was refused bail and is due to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Saturday.

The woman was released pending further investigations.
