Man caught driving drunk on rail lines

A man who allegedly drove drunk along light rail tracks in central Sydney has been charged by police.

The 27-year-old driver was caught driving on the tracks near Central station about 2am Saturday, police said.

Officers said the Toyota Corolla was driving in an "erratic manner" when they spotted it on Hay Street and Pitt Street.

Police stopped the car and breath-tested the driver who allegedly returned a mid-range blood alcohol reading.

His licence was suspended and he was charged with mid-range PCA.

He is due to face Downing Centre Local Court on April 7.

Acting Superintendent Denby Eardley said the man was lucky not to be hurt.

"The light rail network was operating at the time, so it was only good fortune that a ... serious incident did not occur," Mr Eardley said.
