Suspected human remains have been found after the search for a missing swimmer on the NSW Mid North Coast was suspended.

Astin Gerstl, a school leaver from The King's School in Sydney, got into trouble in the water at Little Bay Beach at South West Rocks, on the coast near Kempsey, about 4.20pm on Sunday.

A search involving police and Surf Life Saving NSW over several days failed to locate the 18-year-old.

This morning, police were called to the beach after a member of the public found what is believed to be human remains.

The remains have been taken for forensic examination and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The King's School has offered support for Gerstl's graduating class and the wider community.
