CCTV has captured the moment a man was stabbed several times outside a barbershop in Sydney’s west in what police believe could be a dispute between two neighbours.

Police were called to a shopping precinct on Commercial Road in Lalor Park at about 11.15am on Thursday following reports a person had been stabbed outside the shops.

CCTV shows the alleged offender lunging towards the victim during a scuffle before stabbing him with a kitchen knife multiple times.

Two brave bystanders immediately rush to the 53-year-old’s aid, rushing him inside a nearby barbershop.

When emergency crews arrived, he was treated at the scene for stab wounds before being rushed to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Superintendent Brendan Gorman said the man sustained multiple stab wounds to his back.

Police are working on the theory that the two men know each other and are neighbours.

“Police are out there patrolling, [and] we conduct knife searches all the time in Blacktown and other areas in the city.

The man was arrested at a nearby unit complex shortly after.

“We stop and search people when legally allowed to [and] we encourage people not to take knives unless they are lawfully allowed,” Gorman said.

Police searched an apartment complex across the road from the shopping centre, and arrested a 38-year-old man about 12.50pm.

“Only saw the cop cars turn up and thought, what’s going on?” a resident told 9News.

“Then I saw the helicopters circling around my house.”

Authorities allege the man hid inside the unit block moments after the alleged stabbing before riot squad officers were called in to surround the complex and make the arrest.

“Police have seized a number of exhibits, and they’ll be examined as part of the investigation,” Gorman said.

The man is assisting police with inquiries.
