Jury retires at NSW toddler murder trial

A jury has begun deliberations at the trial of a Sydney man accused of murdering his new girlfriend's toddler after burning her with a cigarette lighter and slamming her head into a wall.

Mohammed Khazma, 25, has pleaded not guilty to murdering the two-year-old girl in December 2016 and to assaulting her causing actual bodily harm in the Sydney granny flat the couple had just moved into.

The defence contended that the girl's mother caused the injuries and death but blamed her boyfriend to cover up her guilt.

The NSW Supreme Court jury retired on Thursday after Justice Elizabeth Fullerton concluded her directions and summing up of the case.
