Jury in Xie murder trial discharged

The jury in the long-running murder trial of Robert Xie has been discharged after being unable to reach a verdict.

After just over 11 days of deliberations, two of which ended with the jury saying it had reached an impasse, it reiterated on Tuesday it is unable to reach a verdict.

On questioning the jury's foreman, Justice Elizabeth Fullerton said she was satisfied there was no possibility of it reaching either a unanimous or majority verdict.

She then discharged the jurors.

Xie silently cried in the dock.

His wife Kathy Lin, who has supported him throughout the trial, wept and shook her head.
