A total fire ban is in place across Sydney today as millions brace for a sweltering end to the school holidays.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast temperatures to hit 35 degrees in the city this afternoon, with western suburbs expected to break 36.

The greater Sydney area has an extreme fire danger rating today, the only one in the state, but a fire ban has also been slapped on the Hunter.

That means no fires are allowed in the open in either region, so those looking to see the holidays out with a celebratory wood-fire barbecue are out of luck.

Fire permits are also voided during a ban.

Lighting a fire on a fire ban day attracts an on-the-spot fine of $2200.

If the matter goes to court, any person found guilty could be subject to a fine of up to $5500 and up to 12 months in prison.

Penalties for a fire that escapes and damages or destroys life, property or the environment can attract penalties of $132,000 and 14 years in prison.

“Fresh north-westerly winds, with hot and dry conditions will lead to elevated fire danger ratings on Monday,” the Bureau of Meteorology said in its fire danger warning for Sydney.

“There is also the chance of elevated thunderstorms with little to no rainfall, most likely in the afternoon.”

A southerly change is expected late in the day.

During high heat conditions people are advised to stay indoors if possible and keep well-hydrated.

Public facilities with air conditioning are also good places to shelter.
