Greyhound supporters ‘March for the Murdered Million’ in Sydney’s Hyde Park

Animal welfare supporters and community members have united in Sydney to remember the greyhounds killed in the racing industry.

More than 300 people flocked to Hyde Park today to reaffirm their commitment to the recent state ban of greyhound racing.

Joining the supporters was Greens NSW MP and Animal Welfare Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi, who praised supporters for their “tireless” commitment to the cause.

“The recent announcement by the NSW government to ban greyhound racing shows people’s movements do work,” Dr Faruqi said.

“It is empowering to be marching together with people across Australia, the UK and the Ireland to remember the dogs that have been needlessly killed for the sake of a bet.”

Dr Faruqi dedicated the rally to late Greens NSW MLC Dr John Kaye, who avidly campaigned against the greyhound racing.

Earlier this month, NSW Premier Mike Baird called for greyhound racing to be suspended after overwhelming evidence of animal cruelty surfaced.

“We will not stand-by and allow the widespread and systemic mistreatment of animals,” Mr Baird said in an official statement made on Facebook.

Yesterday it was revealed the NSW government could owe the industry $4 billion in compensation.

Greyhound racing will be outlawed in NSW from the 1^st of July 2017.
