"The younger man is alleged to have assaulted the older man causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the footpath, knocking him unconscious," a New South Wales Police spokesperson said.

Witnesses detained the younger man until officers arrived.

The injured man was treated by paramedics and taken to Gosford Hospital. He was then transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.

On Thursday 8 November, the 57-year-old man died in hospital.

At the time, the 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and recklessly cause grievous bodily harm.

Investigations are continuing.
