Lifesavers are advising people not to enter the water at a beach on the NSW Central Coast after a teenage girl was bitten on the foot by a small shark.

The 13-year-old was surfing at Avoca Beach early on Friday morning when a one-metre shark bit her left leg, police say.

She suffered puncture wounds to her foot and a cut to her calf.

The teenager was treated on the beach by bystanders who then drove her to Gosford hospital.

Lifesavers are patrolling the beach on jet skis and are advising people not to enter the water.

There has been no sign of the shark.
