Gang sought over armed NSW home invasions

Police believe a local gang may be responsible for ransacking homes in three separate incidents on the NSW north coast this year.

The armed men have invaded homes around Tweed Heads and Byron Bay, each time threatening residents before ransacking the homes and stealing valuables, police say.

In March, an elderly couple were forced at gunpoint to lie on the floor while the group searched their Murwillumbah home.

The gang fled with jewellery and other items.

The elderly man was repeatedly assaulted during the incident, police say.

The gang has also raided two homes in Tweed Heads.

In one invasion, a resident attempting to flee was shot at.

Police have formed a strike force to locate the gang.

The public is being urged to give any information that could identify members.

"We believe the offenders are from the local area, and are confident there are people in the community who know their identity," said Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen on Monday.

Police have warned that the armed group is dangerous.

"It's just fortunate no one has been seriously injured or killed," said Det Insp Cullen.
