Sydney house engulfed in flame after garage fire

Firefighters have managed to contain a blaze that caused significant damage to a house in Sydney’s west this afternoon.

Dark smoke and flames were spotted pouring from the Carramar house about 5.30pm and firefighters found the Wattle Street well alight.

The blaze is understood to have begun in the house’s rear garage and initial reports suggested an unattended gas bottle may have exploded and sparked the fire.

There has also been suggestion the fire may have started inside a car parked in the garage.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters from four stations battled the blaze for more than an hour and managed to stop it spreading to nearby properties.

The Wattle Street property sustained significant damage.

The fire comes as firefighters across the country remind people to check their barbeques and other flammables this long weekend.

A Victorian man suffered serious burns and a deep cut to his head after his gas bottle exploded about 11am.

The 35-year-old is now in a stable condition but firefighters have urged Australians to be careful.

“He’s a very lucky lad,” Victorian Fire and Rescue spokesman Chris Bourne said.
