Endeavour settles $4m bushfire claim

Endeavour Energy has paid out $4 million to settle one of two class actions brought against the company following a devastating bushfire in NSW's Blue Mountains in 2013.

However, the company has refused to comment on what may have caused the blaze and maintains it is not liable for either of the class actions.

"Our thoughts continue to be with the Blue Mountains community and our focus continues to be on maintaining a safe and reliable electricity network," a spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.

The bushfire razed nearly 200 homes and destroyed 3600 hectares of land when it ravaged the lower-mountains suburbs of Winmalee, Springwood and Yellow Rock in October 2013.

The blaze burned for weeks, destroying 194 houses and damaging hundreds more.

The Endeavour Energy spokesman said details of the settlement were confidential and the cause of the fire remained subject to findings by the NSW Supreme Court and coroner.

A separate, $200 million class action lawsuit against the energy company began in the Supreme Court last month.

Resident Sean Johnston and a number of his neighbours allege the fire might have been avoided if Endeavour Energy had chopped down a single, rotting tree.

They allege the company failed to take reasonable steps to properly monitor and clear vegetation around power lines in the mountains west of Sydney.

The hearing is expected to resume next week for two to three weeks of expert evidence.

The findings of a coronial inquiry into the fires are due to be delivered later this year.
