Elections to be held for some New South Wales councils

More than 70 councils will go to the polls across New South Wales today as merger plans stop some councils from holding elections.

In Sydney, independent incumbent Lord Mayor Clover Moore, who has held the position since being elected in 2004, will run alongside six others at the election.

Councils affected by a merger proposal or under administration will not be holding elections this year, while those that have and are expected to remain unchanged will be holding elections.

The unique situation is rare but not unprecedented, NSW Electoral Commission Richard Carroll told ABC News.

"It hasn't been for about two decades that we've had a situation where about half the councils are having elections and half aren't," Mr Carroll said.

"That has the ability of causing some confusion, particularly along the borders between the councils,” he added

Eligible voters who fail to lodge a vote today face being slapped with a $55 fine.

Council elections in Tweed, on the far north coast of NSW, have been delayed until October 29.
