Elderly NSW man hit by car

An elderly man is in hospital with serious head and spinal injuries after being hit by a car in the NSW Illawarra region.

The 88-year-old man was crossing a street in Shellharbour on Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by the car and thrown onto the ground.

Police said the 49-year-old female driver contacted emergency services, and the man was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver, from Barrack Heights, was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

Anyone who saw the incident has been asked to contact police.
