Boys clocked at 113km/h on illegally modified e-bikes in Sydney

Two 16-year-old boys have been busted by police in Sydney's Inner West allegedly using illegally-modified e-bikes.

Police in Burwood caught the two teenagers with two bikes: one that had no pedals and one with pedals that weren't connected to the chain.

One was caught riding at 113km/h and the other was clocked at 88km/h, police said.

"Both bikes were fitted with aftermarket battery packs and relied entirely on throttles to operate," police said in a social media post.

The boys were issued with two penalties each, one for driving an unregistered vehicle and one for being unlicenced to drive such an e-bike.

The fines totalled $1548.

Police said both bikes were seized and issued a plea to parents as e-bikes become more popular.

"Please speak with your children about the very real dangers of riding these illegal bikes," police said.

"Lives are at risk, and serious legal consequences follow."

NSW Premier Chris Minns said he would be reducing the speed limit on e-bikes to 30km/h, whilst the opposition said it would mandate licence plates for e-bike riders under 18 years old.

There have been an increasing number of fatalities linked to e-bikes, including a man in his 30s killed in Sydney's CBD at the start of the month.
