Earthquake rocks NSW regional city

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake has been recorded near the Central Western NSW city of Orange overnight.

Geoscience Australia says tremors began about 7.40pm yesterday at a depth of one kilometre.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries.

Earthquakes below magnitude 3.5 are generally too weak to cause any damage, says Geoscience Australia.

Yesterday’s quake follows a more powerful one near Orange in April which was felt by thousands of people.

The 4.5 magnitude quake near a gold mine was felt as far as Sydney and Wollongong.

Geoscience Australia said Central Western NSW had recorded five major earthquakes since 1977.
