One dead after two cars go up in flames in northern NSW crash

One person has died in a fiery crash in northern NSW this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Pacific Highway, Wotton Way, Coolongolook on the NSW Mid-North Coast, about 240 kilometres north of Sydney.

It is believed an SUV and a sedan collided shortly before 2.40pm, resulting in both going up in flames.

Sadly, one person in the crash died at the scene. Nine

The blaze was extinguished by authorities but unfortunately a body was located inside the sedan.

It is yet to be formally identified.

The driver of the SUV, who is a woman in her 50s, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.

She remained in a serious condition this evening.

A crime scene has been established as authorities investigate, including the Crash Investigation Unit.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area as police control traffic southbound on the M1.

Traffic was expected to remain heavy for several hours.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
