Hidden cameras have helped police catch three boys who allegedly placed large rocks on railway lines on the NSW Central Coast.

Following reports of rocks on tracks near Tuggerah Lakes, police launched an operation involving hidden motion-activated cameras.

Police say that just before 3pm on Wednesday the cameras captured three boys placing large rocks on tracks at Warnervale.

A train struck the rocks but no damage was caused.

Police on Thursday arrested two boys aged 12 and one aged nine and they will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act for the offence of going onto running lines.
