Boy thrown from burning Sydney unit

A young boy has been passed from a burning Sydney unit into the arms of a bystander, while a man jumped out the window to escape a blaze.

The fire broke out in a bedroom of a top floor unit in a two-storey Ashfield block about 2am on Wednesday, Fire & Rescue said.

A man in his 30s broke his leg when he jumped from a window onto a concrete slab to escape the blaze, while a woman had to be rescued from the unit by firefighters.

A four-year-old boy was passed out the window to people below, a Fire & Rescue spokesman said.

All three occupants were treated for smoke inhalation, with the man transferred to Prince Alfred Hospital.

The blaze caused significant damage and forced about 15 residents to be leave the building.
