Baby boy lucky to be alive after pram clipped by out-of-control ute in Sydney’s west

A baby boy has escaped serious injury after his pram was hit by a ute that ran onto a footpath in Sydney's west.

Sixteen-month-old Jonathan Bolitho was with his grandmother Glenda and six-year-old sister Charlotte when the car left the road on Caroline Chisolm Drive in Winston Hills at around 9.10am today.

It narrowly missed Charlotte and her 69-year-old grandmother but hit the pram, sending it hurtling across the front yard of a home.

The ute smashed through two fences, leaving a trail of splintered wood and wreckage in its wake.

Jonathan was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to The Children's Hospital in Westmead with bruising to his leg and face.

His father Benjamin Bolitho told 9NEWS he was still trying to comprehend the news.

"I was shocked, very shocked, very concerned, just didn't know what was going to happen [or] how Jonathan was," he said. 

"Easily it could have been three people hit and much worse injuries."

NSW Police said the little boy was extremely lucky to survive the crash.

"He's had some scans and luckily, he's only sustained some significant bruising to his leg and bruising to a bit of his head," Inspector Robert Toynton said.

"A millimetre the other way, we would have had a tragedy beyond comprehension.”

The driver of the ute, a 29-year-old Glenwood man, stopped to help after the crash and has provided a statement to police.

Drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors in the accident.
