A man who was assaulted after leaving a Sydney party is believed to have been targeted because he was wearing a dress at the time.

Police say the 25-year-old was walking through Newtown about 12.15am on Sunday when he was confronted by three men.

The man returned to the party where he contacted police.

He was treated at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for a large cut to his head and other injuries.

The Newtown local area commander, Superintendent Simon Hardman, said investigations were continuing, and targeting people based on prejudices about their appearance was unacceptable.
