NSW vaccine passport technology won't be trialled in Sydney

The NSW Government is planning to trial its vaccine passport technology about two weeks from the projected end of lockdown.

People will need to scan the QR code on the Service NSW app to get into a venue and it will automatically prove you've been vaccinated.

The trial will being in pubs and restaurants from October 4, 9News politics reporter Chris O'Keefe has confirmed.

However, it will be rolled out in regional NSW rather than in Sydney, which means the pubs will not open early to certain parts of the city.

The technology needs to be further tested but government officials did not want to be seen to allow some parts of Sydney to go out for dinner or a drink while others are under curfew.

NSW is expected to hit its 70 per cent vaccine target around October 18, which will see Greater Sydney and other regions freed from lockdown.
