Smoke to worsen over weekend due to 760 hectare controlled burn

Fire crews have ramped up a 760 hectare hazard reduction burn on the NSW South Coast after operations were scaled down to reduce the smoke over the ANZAC weekend.

The large-scale burn, occurring in the Wattamolla area, is expected continue over next few days with residents in the area warned of reduced visibility and air quality this weekend.

Critical hazard reduction burns are also taking place in the Blue Mountains near Woodford with crews from NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue and National Parks and Wildlife assisting in the efforts.

A third burn is being conducted at Mangrove Mountain on the Central Coast this morning expected to directly protect at least 30 homes and provide a strategic break for 1000's of more in the Wyong and Tuggerah areas.

Earlier this week Sydney became shrouded in a blanket of thick smoke with city's air quality rated worse than Beijing.

Residents in the city's southeast were faced with extremely poor air quality and warned to stay indoors to avoid health impacts.

Conditions in the city have improved today however residents with asthma and other pre-existing health issues to avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
