A trip to the NSW central coast for a family birthday has ended in death for a teenager who fell six storeys from a hotel balcony.

The 19-year-old from the Blue Mountains was found lying unconscious by the pool at Terrigal's Crowne Plaza about 9.30pm on last night.

He had serious head and internal injuries and was rushed by ambulance to Gosford Hospital before being flown to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he died.

"They were all up here on the coast to celebrate a member of the family's birthday," Brisbane Water Local Area Command Inspector Steve Kentwell told the ABC on Sunday.

"This incident obviously has put a big black mark on that.

"I'm not sure if they witnessed it."

NSW Police say they are treating the death as misadventure.
