Travellers warned of major road closures on NSW's north coast

Travellers heading towards the New South Wales north coast are being warned of significant road closures due to bushfire activity.

The warning comes as thousands of school leavers are due to make their way to schoolies festivities in Byron Bay and southern Queensland.

The Pacific Highway remains closed between Woodburn and Woombah due to the Myall Creek Road bushfire in the Richmond Valley.

More than 10,000 lightning strikes have been detected over the Gospers Mountain fire on the state's Central Coast today.

The Summerland Way also remains closed between Casino and Grafton.

NSW Police urge motorists to delay all non-essential travel in the area.

"If you need to travel between Grafton and Ballina, motorists are being asked to use the Gwydir Highway, the New England Highway and the Bruxner Highway instead," NSW Police said in a statement today.

"This alternative will add around 3.5-hours extra to your trip and is not suitable for B-doubles."

The main roads could be closed for some time, and other routes could also be closed at short notice due to bushfire conditions.
