Woman dies after ten get into trouble in water at NSW beach

A woman has died after ten people got into trouble in the water at a NSW South Coast Beach on Easter Sunday.

Ambulance crews were called to Surf Beach at Batemans Bay at 2pm.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was given CPR and taken to Batemans Bay Hospital in a critical condition.

Beachgoers had also tried to save her before crews arrived.

But a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said she couldn't be revived.

Three other people were also rushed to hospital in serious conditions; two men, one in his 40s and another in his 30s, and a woman in her 30s.

Inspector Faye Stockman from NSW Ambulance said the scene was "chaotic".

"All of the patients were out of the water when ambulance crews arrived and three members of the public were attempting CPR on a female who had suffered a cardiac arrest," Insp Stockman, said.

"This is a timely reminder of the importance of knowing CPR and I praise those members of the public for doing everything they could under extremely challenging conditions."

"It's truly heartbreaking to have lost a life here today, especially knowing this group of people was likely enjoying an extended break for the holiday weekend."

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Surf Life Saving Australia Helicopter were involved.

NSW Police said they are investigating, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Batemans Bay is almost 300km south of Sydney and is a popular holiday spot.
