NSW and Cronulla captain Paul Gallen has agreed to pay his $35,000 fine for his abusive tweet, but not before the NRL denied his request to allow him to pay it directly to a charity.
Last week, Gallen’s fine was reduced to $35,000 from $50,000 on appeal.
The fine came after he sent an incensed tweet following the sacking of the Cronulla CEO Steve Noyce.
"Steve Noice (sic) actually cared about players from cronulla’s feelings. Couldn’t say that about any other c--- from Nrl,” he tweeted on October 23 while on holiday in Hawaii.
He later deleted the tweet.
Gallen requested that he be able to pay it directly to a charity that prevents violence against women, but the NRL refused.
The NRL’s denial is sure to cause controversy after Kirisome Auva'a was banned indefinitely.
The South Sydney centre pleaded guilty to charges of recklessly causing injury over an incident in January with an ex-girlfriend.
