Notorious conman Peter Foster has thanked the judge who granted his bid for early release today, after he walked free just one year into his 18-month prison sentence.

“First of all, I think I must thank His Honour Justice Logan, a courageous judge, a compassionate judge,” Foster said outside Brisbane's Federal Court.

He also thanked his lawyer Terry Fisher, calling him “the Bart Cummings of the profession”.

“In many respects I might be a lawyer's dream client because I always seem to be in trouble,” Foster also joked.

The 53-year-old convicted conman applied for the release last month, based on confidential reasons.

He refused to answer questions about his victims outside court.

“I hope you never see me outside a criminal court again,” he said.

Two years ago, he was ordered to serve 18 months of a three-year sentence for flouting a court-ordered ban on participating in the weight-loss industry.

It was over his $6 million SensaSlim oral diet spray scam.

However, Foster went on the run and evaded authorities for a year.

He pretended to be in Fiji but police eventually arrested him in northern NSW last October.

Justice John Logan warned Foster that he would face indefinite imprisonment if he did not stick to an undertaking and stay out of trouble until his full sentence expired in three-and-a-half years.
