No reprieve in sight for Sydney drivers caught in peak hour bottlenecks

The NSW government has been slammed over its failure to address enduring congestion issues on Sydney roads.

Major traffic bugbears have been identified as the Australian Avenue roundabout at Homebush, Windsor Bridge, Camden Valley Way in Leppington, and the intersection of Botany and Bunnerong roads in Matraville.

Some areas have seen a significant drop in traffic speeds during peak periods due to congestion.

Drivers on Milperra Road, heading into the city from Liverpool can expect to travel at just under 17km/h, while those on Military Rd from Balgowlah to the Harbour Bridge clock in at around 18 km/h.

Commuters travelling home along the Pacific Highway from Roseville to Pymble have also been affected, forced to travel at a staggering 19 percent of the speed limit – about 14km/h.

“(Premier Mike) Baird and his ministers talk a very big game on infrastructure but they've neglected the basics,” NSW Opposition Leader Luke Folley said.

“The government is telling you how well they are going to transform your life, but it's taking longer to get home and see your loved ones. No wonder people are cranky.”

Mr Baird promised almost $250 million to fix Sydney's worst pinch points after taking office in March, but progress is proving – quite literally – slow.

At last 100,000 more cars have been registered to drive in NSW in just twelve months, taking the total to a staggering 6.1 million.

With major infrastructure projects like Westconnex expected to not be completed for at least another decade, the pressure is on for the government to deliver on its promises.

“There are major upgrades taking place as we speak,” state Liberal MP John Sidoti said.

“Yes there will be frustration. We will deal with that frustration but there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
