PM's pub abuser charged with attempted murder

A man fined for abusing Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at a Brisbane pub is behind bars after being charged with attempted murder.

Nicholas John Gordon, 26, was taken into custody yesterday after allegedly attacking a woman whom he knew.

She suffered significant facial injuries and cuts to her hands in the incident at a Carina Heights home.

Mr Gordon didn't apply for bail when he came before Brisbane Magistrates Court briefly today.

He made national headlines last month after hurling abuse at Mr Turnbull during a "politics in the pub" event at Carindale.

He was later fined $756 over the incident, and former ALP senator Sam Dastayari set up a web page asking for donations to "buy him a beer".

It has so far received $1079, more than enough to pay the fine.

Mr Turnbull brushed off the incident at the time. 

"There was one gentleman there, who clearly had a few drinks too many," he joked.

"I think he was assisted to make an early return home, which was probably where he should have gone earlier in the evening."

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten later said "if you're a politician who doesn't expect a bit of advice from the cheap seats, well then you're dreaming."

Mr Shorten's attempt to try to make an issue of it was nothing more than a "a cheap political jibe", Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said.

"The political opportunism of Mr Shorten was pretty crass and it has been shown for what it was," he said.

Mr Gordon is not required to appear when his matter returns to court on July 2.
