'Netflix for cars': Vehicle subscription services come to Australia

Car manufacturers will soon offer customers a monthly subscription to drive whichever model they want, experts say.

Queensland's peak motoring body says subscription services, similar to Spotify or Netflix, are filtering into the automotive industry.

"They're actually developing their own models of subscription around vehicle ownership. It becomes a shift from ownership to access," Dr Rebecca Michael from RACQ said.

Motorama at Springwood launched its Motopool service in December.

"People are looking at subscription these days as the way forward. So we thought, why not with cars aswell?" general manager Caleb Gunn said.

For $990 a month, customers can choose from a range of Holden models including Colorados, Commodores and Captivas.

Luxurious Camaros, SportsCats and Acadias are among those available in the premium range, for $1800 per month.

Insurance, registration and car services are all included in the cost.

"The real benefit is you can match your car to your lifestyle," Mr Gunn said.

"So if you want to go out camping or hitting the beach one weekend, you grab the nice sporty dual-cab."

After cruising around for a couple of weeks in a Holden Commodore, Motopool customer Andrew Cosgrove will soon switch to a Chevrolet Camaro.

When he tires of that, he wants to take a SportsCat for an off-road adventure.

"I like the idea of being able to get in a car, choose the one I need, and I have different needs throughout the month too," he said.

While Motopool is the first of its kind in Queensland, more car subscription companies are looking to burst into the Brisbane market.
