Mexican National dies in rip at NSW far north coast beach

A man has died at an unpatrolled beach on NSW’s far north coast after getting stuck in a rip.

The 36-year-old Mexican national was swimming at Brunswick Heads when he began struggling shortly before midday yesterday.

Nearby surfers noticed the man struggling and paddled over to him, pulling him onto a board.

They then began CPR in an attempt to resuscitate the man.

Officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District were called to the beach, and took over CPR until paramedics arrived.

The man was unable to be revived and died at the scene.

A post mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of the man’s death.

Officers who attended the scene are now liaising with the Mexican Embassy. It is believed the man had been working locally in the area.

According to Royal Life Saving Australia, as of 30 January 2019 there have been 84 drowning deaths reported in Australia this summer.

At the same time last year, there were 55 deaths recorded.
