Two accused thieves have been arrested after crashing a stolen car and then leading police on a frantic foot chase in Melbourne’s north.

The pair crashed the stolen Audi into a silver hatchback on Plenty Road in Bundoora about 1pm, near the murder scene of international student Aiia Maasarwe.

Scores of investigators, who were just metres away, leapt into action as the offenders fled.

Video shows the 32-year-old female suspect being pinned down by police, as her 33-year-old male accomplice dashed into a nearby family’s home.

He quickly scaled the roof of the property, as officers armed with batons surrounded the home.

Resident Gina was sitting in her backyard when the fugitive burst over her fence.

“I ran and locked the door,” she said.

The man was on the roof for around five minutes before officers used this step ladder to climb up after him. Despite all the earlier commotion, he peacefully surrendered into the arms of officers.

Nine News understands the suspects have offered little explanation for their bizarre dash from the law.

Charges are yet to be laid, but it’s expected the duo will be charged with reckless conduct endangering life and theft of motor vehicle.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
