New Year's Eve weather guide: Capital city state-by-state forecast

With one-quarter of the 21st century just about wrapped up, it's time to take a look ahead at how the weather will play out on New Year's Eve as we ring in 2025.

At this stage, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide look set for fine conditions, Brisbane and Darwin will likely be hot, humid and rainy, while Perth residents will be sweltering through the last day of the year.

Here's a state-by-state guide to how the weather is looking on December 31.

Brisbane, Queensland

Brisbane is heading for a hot, humid New Year's Eve with thunderstorms and rain in the evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a 60 per cent chance of rain, with up to 6mm expected along with some possible thunderstorms.

The city is set for a top of 29 and an overnight minimum of 23, and the partly cloudy conditions will be accompanied by an average humidity of about 75 per cent.

Sydney, New South Wales

Classic New Year's Eve weather is on the horizon for Sydney, with hot conditions forecast and a slight chance of showers in the afternoon and early evening.

At this stage Sydney is set for a top of 28 and low of 20 degrees, and humidity reaching around the mid-60 per cent range.

A couple of afternoon and evening showers could come down but they appear set to clear before the fireworks.

Winds of 15-20km/h are expected throughout the day, but are again expected to ease up by the evening.

Melbourne, Victoria

Melbourne is predicted to be warm and breezy but largely clear on New Year's Eve this year after some early cloud cover.

Tuesday is predicted to hit a top of 26 degrees, with southerly winds of between 15 and 25km/h helping the city reach a low of 13.

Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Canberra is also set for a warm New Year's Eve.

While not much precipitation is predicted, there is a chance of a shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon and early evening.

The nation's capital will have a top of 29 and low of 14, with winds of up to 25km/h after lunchtime.

Adelaide, South Australia

Sunny, warm and clear conditions should help Adelaide ring in the new year in great spirits.

Adelaide is forecast to have a top of 30 degrees, with light winds coming mostly from the south contributing to a low of 15.

Perth, Western Australia

Perth is set for an absolute scorcher on New Year's Eve – temperatures are set to reach 37 degrees, and with gusts of up to 70km/h expected, parts of the state will be under high fire danger ratings for the day.

Temperatures will stay in the high 30s for the first few days of 2025, and could get close to nudging 40 on New Year's Day.

Hobart, Tasmania

Hobart is likely to be partly cloudy but largely pleasant on New Year's Eve.

Currently, it is forecast to have a top of 22 and a low of 14 degrees with a slight chance of a shower.

Darwin, Northern Territory

Darwin is the capital most likely to cop a New Year's Eve drenching. There's a 60 per cent chance of rain, with up to 8mm expected, including the possibilty of a thunderstorm.

It is forecast to have a top of 35 degrees with light winds and moderate humidity.
