New taskforce to tackle youth crime in south-east Queensland

Police have set up a taskforce to tackle youth crime and juvenile gangs in south-east Queensland, a year after the state government's vow crack down on young offenders.

It comes amid increasing calls for action, as a car driven by children and teens is stolen almost every night across the state.

One incident captured on video shows two car loads of underage offenders terrorising and almost running down a group of children on a soccer field.

Several other incidents have proven fatal and posed significant risk to others.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith, who previously led the charge against outlaw motorcycle gangs in south-east Queensland, will now help tackle the issue.

"It's not going to be easy but it's too important of an issue not to try," Superintendent Smith said.

"We've had great success tackling OMCGs and I expect us to have success in the street gang area."

Taskforce Uniform Knot let by the Organised Crime Gangs Group will be a multi-agency response.

Intervention and prevention of youth crime will be a key focus.

"They're putting mums, dads and families at risk by stealing cars and driving at high speed," Superintendent Smith said.

"The drivers behind why young people become involved in this activity is complex."

The taskforce will run for six months, with the possibility of extension if it sees positive results.

The opposition said the taskforce should tackle youth crime across the whole state and not just the south-east.

Shadow Police Minister Dale Last said juvenile crime remains at large in North Queensland, but little is being done to stop it.

"Where are those resources for places like Mareeba, Cairns and Townsville?" he said.

"They're having their heart and soul ripped out."
