Deep sea exploration of the Indian Ocean begins
A new research centre in Perth is allowing scientists to explore thousands of kilometres beneath the ocean.
The Deep Sea Research Centre is a collaboration between scientists from the University of Western Australia and Andrew Forrest's Minderoo Foundation.
Researchers from the centre will focus on exploring WA's coast and are hoping to get a better understanding of the marine life and deepest areas of the Indian Ocean.

A submarine mission will explore the ocean floor six kilometres below the surface of the Indian Ocean.
"The Indian Ocean historically has been almost neglected," Professor Alan Jamieson from the UWA Deep Sea Research Centre told 9News.
"There's been lots done in the Atlantic, Pacific, but the Indian Ocean has fallen by the wayside."

A team of five scientists have already begun mapping parts of the Indian Ocean and taking videos.
The crew have an expedition planned to explore the Perth Canyon in March after which they'll head to Japan in June.
