New red light cameras to help crack down on dangerous Sydney drivers

A series of serious crashes caused by drivers running red lights has prompted the New South Wales Government to install new cameras across Sydney.

At least nine new cameras will be installed by end of this year at intersections with a history of accidents.

For the first month of the new cameras’ operation, drivers will be given warning letters rather than fines for infringements.

The government’s Speed Camera Performance Review found red light speed cameras had reduced casualties by almost 40 percent, while pedestrian casualties were down by almost 45 percent.

The current penalty for running a red light is $433 and the loss of three demerit points.

All money raised from the cameras is put back into road safety programs, such as flashing lights in school zones and roadside barriers

• Intersection of Foveaux St and Crown St, Surry Hills: 16 crashes, 12 injuries

• Intersection of McEvoy St and Elizabeth St, Waterloo: 42 crashes, 25 injuries  

• Intersection of Great Western Highway and Marsden St, Parramatta: 23 crashes, 20 injuries

• Intersection of Great Western Highway and Clunies Ross St, Prospect: 30 crashes, 29 injuries

• Intersection of Cumberland highway and Merrylands Rd, Merrylands West: 46 crashes, 38 injuries

• Intersection of Rawson St and Northumberland Rd, Auburn: 13 crashes, 9 injuries

• Intersection of Polding St and The Boulevarde, Fairfield Heights: 39 crashes, 30 injuries

• Intersection of Moore St and Bathurst St, Liverpool: 17 crashes, 13 injuries
